Every once in a while a game comes along that revolutionises the video game industry. Shenmue was one such game. Dodging any attempt to slot it into a genre, Shenmue was unlike anything that came before - similar to a role-playing game in that it has an excellent narrative, it encompasses 3D fighting elements and quick-time events all in the same game. The story of Shenmue involves you witnessing the murder of your father and your quest to track down the killer. The desire for revenge is strong but you need to find out why this happened and unravel the mystery surrounding the murder. Shenmue was one of the games that set the bar for how a virtual world should be and how narrative should function in it. There are over 230 non-playable characters that all have lives. They sleep, go to work, socialise and you can interact with all of them. You get to know these people and even eventually remember their names. Looking at certain objects or being in certain areas triggers memories that are relevant to the story. Shenmue features time and weather elements that add to the realism of the title. Shops are open in the day, bars are open at nighttime and that gives the feeling of a real world. The lighting in the game constantly changes depending on what time of day it is, and when it is raining people walk around with umbrellas. Shenmue 2 picks up the story where Ryo, our hero, arrives in Hong Kong, hot on the trail of Lan Di, a member of the Chinese cartel who murdered his father. Shenmue 2 has a brilliant storyline, diverse gameplay, and can truly be classed as a masterpiece. The game may seem a little slow at first, but if you give it a chance you will find one of the best-designed and involving game experiences ever. It s like being a kung-fu master / Sherlock Holmes living in Hong Kong in the 1980s. Crazy, but cool. Shenmue 2 is gaming cinema. This current-generation version offers modern features including fully-scalable screen resolution, choice of modern or classic control schemes and, of course, the choice between English of Japanese voiceovers.
