The Lawnmower Man, released in 1994, is a unique 16-bit action title based on the cult sci-fi film of the same name. Unlike the CD-based interactive movie versions, the Mega Drive edition is a high-energy hybrid of multiple gameplay styles. You take control of either Dr. Angelo (Pierce Brosnan) or Carla Parkette as they venture into the digital realm to stop Jobe, the "Lawnmower Man," who has evolved into a superhuman cyber-entity intent on global domination.

The game is famous for its trippy, experimental visuals that pushed the Mega Drive's hardware to its limits. It blends traditional "run-and-gun" side-scrolling levels (reminiscent of Contra) with surreal, first-person 3D Virtual Reality sequences. In these VR stages, the screen auto-scrolls through vibrant, low-polygon tunnels and cyber-landscapes, requiring fast reflexes to dodge obstacles and fend off viruses. With a pumping techno soundtrack and a variety of "Cyber" stages—including Cyber War, Cyber Run, and the dizzying Cyber Tube—this title remains a distinct and visually striking piece of retro gaming history.
